The “gray area” in a classic white kitchen

As I virtually walk myself through the room, I am particularly attracted to the open and carefree feel in this large, expansive space. Columns defined by moldings and enormous framed windows gush sunlight in from all directions below a highly impressive ceiling detail. Capturing the essence of a home’s architectural appeal is quite a feat, and this fabulous design doesn’t forget to add the frosting on the cake! A decorative, bell-shaped range hood delicately softens the view, adding a bit of relief from the stately, but heavily-weighted straight lines throughout.

Furniture style embellishments are a simple way to create a hutch-like display with a wall cabinet. Shown above: Doors with beveled glass in a stacked configuration and an integrated deluxe end with glass enhance the custom appeal.

Beyond the white space

In today’s kitchens, you can’t escape the classic appeal of white, but this is not your typical white kitchen due to its unexpected finish details: Cottage White offers slight transparency to the character of maple while the crisp brightness is softened by a dry-brushed accent. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Peppercorn further enhanced by Ebony Glaze and Highlight brings an inviting and homey feel to formal rooms such as this. Remember, “dressed-up” doesn’t always have to mean “serious.”  Even so, the overall palette feels classy, exemplifying sophistication and elegance.

Escaping storage stereotypes

Of course, wall cabinets are a typical inclusion in a kitchen, but I appreciate the absence of them in this space. Thanks to this kitchen’s sprawling footprint, there is ample storage in the design without obstructing the incredible windows. This truly is an example of balancing priorities and looking for less common ways to achieve a goal. With storage solutions galore, each base cabinet lives up to its full potential. Notice how all of these solutions are found in the cabinets below the countertop:

Defined for the baker, this zone is equipped with a wood block top, and directly below access to bulk goods with an integrated bin drawer system:

Cooking essentials are well contained within a pair of full-height pullouts for easy access:

Note the inclusion of full-height doors for a streamlined aspect to the design.

Every drawer is equipped to maintain neat and organized interiors:

And this flexible system offers organization for all odd-shaped items:

In fact, it seems to me that there just wouldn’t be a single excuse for cluttered counters when afforded this luxury of organization capabilities!

Go with the flow

The adjoining dining space flows organically from the kitchen, tying in the Peppercorn finish from the island. Columns separate the two areas while still allowing plenty of light to shine in.

For large homes, the inclusion of tailor-made areas like this wet-bar makes the task of serving coffee or cocktails more pleasurable and connected between hosts and guests.

A pull-out work surface is always thoughtful when counter space is minimal:

Stepping back into the kitchen is the room’s “belle of the ball,” this incredible island. Substantial and multifaceted beyond measure, it really deserves a roving spotlight!

Not only does it provide an amazing amount of prep space but also combines furniture detailing with a plethora of functionality. I am a bit envious of all that it offers—almost an entire kitchen’s worth of storage, display, and seating is designed into this beauty.

For cooking and meal prep, there is a double waste bin and a secondary sink, which we all know is not only desirable but also necessary when you’re dealing with such an expansive room.

Beveled glass doors and shelving allow lighting to pour through the display cabinet, highlighting serving pieces and accessories against a wainscot interior back; this island is thriving with embellished flair!

Design Tip:
When an island exceeds the maximum allowed length for a deluxe panel, integrate strategic recesses or projections to retain a customized design!

The Astragal baseboard molding and curvy turned legs finish off this masterpiece impeccably by giving it that classic furniture look. Islands become the heart-of-the-home’s “central station,” and this one definitely leaves little else to be desired.
