Throughout the year a premier team of color experts from around the globe meets to determine four key color groups for the overarching markets of North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. This team operates under the nonprofit organization known as Color Marketing Group and has been doing so for over 50 years! The four key color foundations are released annually as themes to breathe new life into the design and marketing worlds for every good and product that color touches. Each has its own story and extensive palette that connects people everywhere on emotional, economic and social platforms.
Are you Alert?!
As I’m reviewing the 2018 color forecast, I find myself also looking back at the 2017 CMG color stories and how they inspired our creativity and influenced interior trends. Here are several of my favorite Color Alerts from 2017:

Color Alerts are issued monthly by Color Marketing Group and include a montage of products showing how a forecast color is being used throughout various industries. What I find intriguing is that the forecast is established 2 years prior to the year we actually see the Color Alerts. Pretty powerful, don’t you think?
Depending on your social media platform preference, you can follow Color Marketing Group to make sure you’re in the know each month a Color Alert is released, amongst other topics.
Connecting the dots
You see, those who are “in the know” and prepare annual color palettes for their brands are members of Color Marketing Group and attend the workshops that lead to the summit in November. This summit is the pinnacle workshop (pun intended!) where the forecast for the four key intercontinental themes are determined. If you look back at the article, WHAT’S YOUR HUE, you can see how these color stories are connected to what becomes color palettes for many.
A glimpse of what’s to come
So here we are, 9 days into 2018 and the hot topic that has my color eye stimulated is the January Color Alert, which outlines Color Marketing Group’s 2018 World Color Forecast:
This story speaks to what I love the most: How nature’s elements have always been the original inspiration! I mean, can one have too many agates?! (I don’t think so…)
And if you’re a fellow trend tracker, you are also watching these stories play out for major interior retailers. I think it’s fair to say, nature-inspired design trends are well established and it looks like the 2018 CMG key color themes are predicting an even deeper connection. As I’m looking into that magical future orb (watching what the forecasts are predicting) the change for 2018 will be to see more bold color being used alongside nature-esque themes; steering away from the monochromatic scenes that have been so popular in the past few years.
For some reason, this cycle of color palettes and the forecasting process reminds me of a scene from one of my favorite movies, The Devil Wears Prada:
The similarity: While we may not realize it, all of the collaboration efforts and color stories that Color Marketing Group publishes are the beginning of the trend cycle that stimulates new color palettes for subsequent companies, like paint suppliers and cabinet brands like Medallion, each and every year. I just find all of this to be inspiring and am grateful for the people who are dedicated to making this happen!
